HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. - The Tennessee women's golf team was rocking and rolling at the third annual Darius Rucker Intercollegiate on Friday.

The weekend event (March 7-9) takes place at the Long Cove Club and is hosted by country music artist Darius Rucker. The 2014 field is composed of 17 teams, 15 of which are nationally ranked in the top-50.

Tennessee shot a 304 (+20) and is currently in 11th place after the opening round of the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate.

"Although we didn't play our best today, we are in decent shape," head coach Judi Pavon said. "The conditions were really tough out there and this is a challenging course. We stumbled a little on holes 12-15, but other than that we played pretty well."

Lucia Polo led the way for the Lady Vols with three birdies and a first round score of 74 (+3). The freshman from Guatemala is tied for 22nd heading into the second round.

"The conditions were hard, but I played good to keep the round in control," Polo said.

Senior Chessey Thomas shot a 75 (+4) to sit in a tie for 32nd place. Thomas has been the top finisher for UT in each of the tournaments she has played this season.

Sisters Emmie and Hannah Pietila finished back-to-back on the Volutneer leaderboard. Competing as an individual, Emmie Pietila shot a 76 (+5) and is currently tied for 45th while Hannah Pietila shot a 77 (+6) and is tied for 53rd.

Daeun Song started strong for Tennessee by sinking two birdies on her front nine. However, Song slipped on the back nine to card a 78 (+7).

Mason Chen rounded out the Lady Vols' lineup with a first round 83 (+12).

The Duke Blue Devils are atop the Darius Rucker leaderboard with a first round score of 284 (E). The Blue Devils have a nine stroke advantage heading into the second round. Meanwhile, Alabama's Stephanie Meadow leads the individual race with a first round 67 (-4).

The Lady Vols have participated in all three Darius Rucker Intercollegiate tournaments. Last season, UT finished in eighth place with a score of 902 (+50). Erica Popson led the Lady Volunteers with a 217 (+4) and a seventh place finish.

Tennessee will begin its second round at 9:30 a.m. (ET) on Saturday morning.
