Head Coach Judi Pavon's golf squad ran into a surprisingly tough second-round course as scores rose throughout the field at the 2004 SunTrust Lady Gator Invitational at the Florida University Club in Gainesville, Fla. The team finished the second day in fifth place with a 620 (301-319). Top-ranked Duke looks to be running away with the title after firing a 588 (292-296), while the Blue Devil pair of Anna Grzebien (73-72) and Brittany Lang (72-73) claimed the individual lead with 145 totals.
As for the Big Orange, sophomore Violeta Retamoza (Aguascalientes, Mexico) remained just three strokes off the lead pace with a sixth-place 148 (72-76), while both sophomore Golda Johansson (Lund, Sweden), playing as an individual, and senior Tai Perry (Unionville, Pa.) made a slight move up the leaderboard with a pair of 20th-place-tying 156 totals. Senior Mary Jan Fernandez (Henderson, Nev.) suffered a setback with a 158 (76-82) to fall into a 38th-place tie, while team captain Jessica Shepley (Oakville, Ontario, Canada) dropped into a 59th-place tie with a 162 (76-86). Freshman Holly Cantwell (Morristown, Tenn.) rounded out the UT effort with a 168 (86-82) to tie for 76th place.
Next up, UT concludes the Lady Gator Invitational with a shotgun start on Tuesday, March 9 at 8 a.m.
