BATON ROUGE, La. - The 15th-ranked Tennessee Lady Vol golf team finds itself three shots behind host Louisiana State on the leader board after Friday's first round at the LSU Tiger Golf Classic held at the University Club in Baton Rouge.
The Lady Vols shot a 10-over par 298 on Friday. The fifth-ranked Tigers are in first with a seven-over 295 in the tournament's first round. No. 11 North Carolina rounds out the top three with a first-day showing of 13-over 301.
Junior Sara Monberg fired the team's best round with a one-over 73. The Juelesminde, Denmark, native is tied for seventh in the field and is just three strokes behind the leader in Marina Alex of Vanderbilt. Monberg recorded par on 15 holes, using a birdie along with two bogeys to card her one-over tally on the day.
"I was just trying to hit one shot at a time and make sure I hit a lot of greens," Monberg said. "I had a lot of birdie chances but did not really take advantage of them. I stayed patient and told myself that pars were good too."
One shot behind Monberg in the standings is sophomore Kaitlyn Rohrback, who carded a two-over 74 Friday. Rohrback is currently tied for eleventh and recorded four birdies through the first round of the tournament.
Erica Popson, a junior, recorded two birdies for UT on the day, shooting a 75 in the Classic's opening day. After a bogey on the first hole, she responded with a birdie to pull back to even en route to a three-over tally for the round.
Sophomore Chessey Thomas, competing as an individual this weekend, put up a 79 in round one, good for a T-42 placement.
"Sara played very well all day," Head coach Judi Pavon said. "Kaitlyn also played great; she had a great round going but finished with a double bogey so she was a little disappointed."
"The girls were tough out there today," Pavon added. "The weather was not very nice, windy, cold and rainy, so the fact that all of the girls shot 76 or better was pretty solid."
The Lady Vols will tee off on the first hole Saturday beginning at 10 a.m.
