LAS VEGAS, Nev.- The No. 9 Tennessee Lady Volunteer golf squad claimed fourth place as the UNLV Spring Invitational wrapped up play at the Black Mountain Golf & Country Club on Wednesday. Senior Jessica Shepley (Oakville, Ontario) led the way for UT by shooting an even par 72 in the final round. Her efforts helped Tennessee pick up its sixth top-10 showing in as many tries on the year.
The final round 72 gave Shepley a three-day total of 225, good for a fifth-place tie, the senior's best finish of the year. After a bogey on the par-3 6th, Shepley went on a tear, carding par or better on each of the remaining holes including birdies on the par-5 9th and 16th.
Preseason All-American Violeta Retamoza (Aguascalientes, Mexico) fired a final round of 76, which propelled her to a total of 231 to tie for 18th place. Freshman Marci Turner (Tompkinsville, Ky.) shot a final round 5-over 77 to earn a tie for 22nd with a three-day score of 232.
Sarah Bonner-Shanks (Kingsport, Tenn.) improved her score each day after a first-round total of 83 and a second-day 79, the senior fired a 77 in round three for an event score of 239 and a tie for 36th. Golda Johansson (Lund, Sweden) finished with a score of 77 and tournament total of 243 to end up tied for 52nd.
Christie Reed (Coral Spring, Fla.) concluded the event with a score of 249 to
earn a tie for 74th. The freshman was competing in her second consecutive
event as an individual.
Head Coach Judi Pavon's squad picked up its fifth top-five finish in six tries on the year and is now set for the Liz Murphy Collegiate in Athens, Ga. March 25-27.
