Head Coach Judi Pavon's orange-clad linksters carded a solid round on the first day of the Bryan National Collegiate at Bryan Park in Greensboro, N.C., as the squad wound up in eighth place with a 302. Duke leads the tournament with a first-round 289, while Auburn and Purdue are tied for second with a pair of 294s. Duke's Virada Nirapathpongporn and Purdue's Beth Hermes paced the first round with two-under 70s.
As for the Big Orange, senior Mary Jan Fernandez (Henderson, Nev.) and sophomore Violeta Retamoza (Aguascalientes, Mexico) topped Tennessee with a pair of 15th-place-tying rounds of 74. Sophomore Golda Johannson (Lund, Sweden) continued her recent resurgence with a 75 to tie for 29th place, while junior Teesha Ash (Chattanooga, Tenn.) posted a 79 to tie for 54th place. Junior Jessica Shepley (Oakville, Ontario, Canada) rounded out the UT effort with an 83 to tie for 83rd place.
Next up, the Lady Vols come back for the second round of the Bryan National on Saturday, which begins at 8:30 a.m. ET. UT then concludes the tournament on Sunday with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.
