Oxford, Miss. - The Tennessee women's golf team is tied for eighth place after the first round of the Rebel Intercollegiate. Led by freshman Hannah Pietila, the Lady Vols shot a 296 (+8) that included 11 birdies and an eagle.
Much like the spring weather, Pietila's game has been heating up as of late. The Michigan native currently leads the field at the Rebel Intercollegiate with a first round 70 (-2). Pietila got an early spark when she sank an eagle on hole No. 2.
"I played pretty good today," Pietila said. "The course gives you opportunities for good scores plus the eagle I hit really helped, too. I'm just looking forward to 36-holes tomorrow."
Pietila has continued her stellar play from last week's Bryan National Collegiate where she led the Lady Volunteers with a 27th place finish.
Senior Chessey Thomas sank three birdies en route to a first round 73 (+1). She is tied for 15th place heading into Saturday's 36-hole day. Junior Daeun Song also recorded three birdies as she carded a 74 (+2) and tied for 31st.
Newell is returning to action for the first time since the Alamo Invitational in October. The Tampa native sat out four tournaments while recovering from a back injury.
Due to expected inclement weather on Sunday, the Rebel Intercollegiate will play the remaining 36 holes on Saturday. It will be an 8:15 a.m. (CT), shotgun start with groups of four.

Ace For Mason
On Thursday, one competitor from each school competed in the Ole Miss College Amateur. Mason Chen represented Tennessee. On her first hole of the competition, Chen sank a hole-in-one on the No. 16 hole.
"Actually, my first reaction was that I was shocked," Chen said. "But it was awesome!"
The 172 yard, No. 16 hole was aced by a 6-iron. Chen said it was her second career hole-in-one.
