GREENSBORO, N.C. - The 14th-ranked Tennessee Lady Vol golf team sits in third place at the conclusion of day one of competition on Friday at the Bryan National Collegiate hosted by Wake Forest University.
In a field featuring six teams in the GolfStat top 25, UT fired a five-over 293 and is three shots back of clubhouse leader Northwestern at Bryan Park's Player's Course.
Junior Erica Popson fired Tennessee's lone round under par with a one-under 71 and is tied for second entering the second round.
Junior Sara Monberg is tied for 13th at 1-over 73, while senior Nathalie Mansson is deadlocked at 23rd after a 2-over 74 score. Sophomore Kaitlyn Rohrback sits in a tie for 28th with a 3-over 75 and freshman AJ Newell rounded out scoring for UT, carding an 80 in the event's first round.
"All in all we had a good day today," Lady Vol head coach Judi Pavon said. "It is always frustrating to lose shots toward the end of the round, but we had a lot of birdies out there too. Erica had a good round. Sara continues to play well and it was good to see Nathalie get off to a good start today."
Popson, Rohrback and Newell each recorded three birdies on the day as Monberg and Mannson tallied two birdies each at the par-72 course.
Northwestern sits atop the leader board at two over and is two shots ahead of No. 26 South Carolina (+4). Behind Tennessee, Wake Forest (+7), Ohio State (+9) and Florida State (+9) round out the top five.
Individually, South Carolina's Katie Burnett holds the lead by one stroke after firing a two-under 70 on Sunday. Six players, including Popson, sit in second at 1-under.
Teams begin Monday's second round at 8:20 a.m. Tee times and live results can be found at golfstat.com.
