Violeta Retamoza matched her first round total with a 70 |
April 19, 2003
LEXINGTON, Ky.
The No. 10 University of Tennessee Lady Vol golf squad withstood an unrelenting charge by the Florida Gators to stay in first place and only allow UF to tie the tournament at the 2003 Southeastern Conference Championships even though UT was forced to count a quintuple bogey on the second hole in Lexington, Ky. The Big Orange fired a two-day 16-over 592 (291-301), which ties for the fifth-lowest two-round total in program history.
Individually, freshman Violeta Retamoza (Aguascalientes, Mexico) trails South Carolina's Kristy McPherson by one shot after posting a career-best four-under second-place 140 (70-70), which is tied for the second-lowest two-day individual total in UT history.
"It was a tough day today as we had to count a nine on the second hole and a double bogey on the 18th." Head Coach Judi Pavon said. "To be tied with Florida at this point is good.
"Violeta is just an unbelievable and exciting player to watch." Pavon said. "She has a strong desire and a lot of heart and really believes she can win this tournament. Shepley hung in there and always plays well for us."
Junior Mary Jan Fernandez (Henderson, Nev.) continued her stellar play at the
tournament with a season-low two-over 146 (71-75) to tie Mississippi State's
Sofi Anderson and Arkansas' Lina Axelson for fourth place, while team captain
Jessica Shepley (Oakville, Ontario, Canada) tied Florida's Jeanne Cho and
Auburn's Celeste Troche for 11th-place with a five-over 149 (71-78). Shepley
proved she is a team player as she bounced back from an early five-over second
hole to play even-par the rest of the way. Junior Tai Perry (Unionville, Pa.)
posted a 13-over 157 (79-78) to finish in 33rd-place, while rookie Golda
Johansson (Lund, Sweden) recorded a 58th-place 172 (84-88).
