HOOVER, Ala. -- Firing a 2-over par 74 Saturday, junior Chessey Thomas led the Lady Vols through the second round of the SEC Women's Golf Tournament at Greystone Golf and Country Club.

Tennessee shot a second-day score of 309 (+21), improving by three strokes from the first round.

"We had a better front nine today, but didn't finish as strong so we didn't manage to improve our position," head coach Judi Pavon said. "Second or third place will still be within reach if we can play well tomorrow, so that's where we will put our focus."

Thomas carded three birdies on the day and is in a tie for 13th. Senior Sara Monberg shot 8-over par 80, to sit in a tie for 21st, while senior Erica Popson finished the day 6-over to be in a tie for 27th. Sophomore AJ Newell wraps up UT's counted scores at 5-over to have a two-day total of 158 (+14) to be in a tie for 36th. Sophomore Daeun Song finished the day at 13-over par.

"Today, Chessey stepped up and played well for us and AJ made a big improvement from yesterday," Pavon said. "We need to have all five scores well under 80 tomorrow to make a move."

Alabama took over the lead after carded a 293 in the second round for a two day total of 597. Mississippi State (609) follows in second and Georgia (611) is in third. Kentucky (614) and LSU (614) are tied for fourth while South Carolina (615) and Vanderbilt (618) are in sixth and seventh, respectively.
