After a slow start, the University of Tennessee Lady Volunteer golf team rebounded on the back nine to finish round one in seventh place on the first day of the NCAA East Regional at the El Campeon course at the Mission Inn Golf and Tennis Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. after scoring a 19-over 307. UT stands 21 shots back of leader Duke, who paced the field after shooting a two-under 286. UNLV is second with a 9-over 297, followed by Oklahoma State at 11-over (299).
"The second half of our round was solid," Head Coach Judi Pavon said. "We are playing on a very difficult course and got off to a tough start. We need to work on getting four good scores in tomorrow."
Tennessee was lead individually by sophomores Golda Johansson (Lund, Sweden) and Violeta Retamoza, with both posting rounds of 74, two-over par. Johansson was consistent on the course from the onset, reeling off 11 straight pars at one point. The pair of bogeys came on a pair of par-fours, 13 and 7. Retamoza weathered a tough start over her first nine holes, standing at six-over at the turn. The Augascalientes, Mexico native scored four birdies over the last nine holes, including back-to-back threes on the par-four 4 and 5 holes. The pair sit tied for 13th in the overall standings.
"Golda was very steady and solid all day," Pavon said. "Violeta played a lot better on the back nine, while Jessica Shepley had a solid round but didn't finish well."
The Tennessee scorecard was rounded out by Shepley (Oakville, Ontario, Canada), who posted a six-over 78, putting the junior in a tie for 42nd, while freshman Holly Cantwell (Morristown, Tenn.) fired a nine-over 81 and is tied for 70th. Junior Teesha Ash (Chattanooga, Tenn.) rounded out the UT effort with a 15-over 87.
"I was stable throughout the whole round," Johansson said. "I didn't make any big mistakes today. I am very, very pleased with my effort on the course today."
Next up, the Lady Vols will pair up once again with Furman and South Carolina in the second round on Friday. Tennessee is in the second set of times that are set to tee off at 12:30 p.m. The first set of times begin at 8:15 a.m. UT concludes the tournament on Saturday with 8:10 a.m. tee times.
