Polo (+1) impressed in Cougar 2nd round
Sept. 9, 2013
CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The Tennessee women's golf team inched its way up the Cougar Classic leaderboard on Monday. The Lady Vols closed the gap on the top-10 by shooting a second round 296 (+8) at the Yeamans Hall Club. The Big Orange is currently in 12th place with a two-day total of 595 (+19).
The entire squad has competed well for head coach Judi Pavon this week, all finishing within a few strokes of one another. With a new Lady Vol rising to the occasion each round, the young lady from Guatemala answered the call on Monday.
Freshman Lucia Polo carded a second round 73 (+1) and is currently tied for 36th. Polo's second round consisted of some seriously steady play that resulted in one birdie, two bogeys, and the rest pars. At one point, Polo recorded nine consecutive pars.
"I've played steady all week, haven't done anything great but I also haven't done anything terrible," Thomas said. "I need to do a better job capitalizing when I have opportunities tomorrow."
Thomas, the native of Spokane, Wash., was very complementary of teammate Chen after the second day of the Cougar Classic.
"I think Mason (Chen) has played well this week," Thomas said. "She only had a few chances to play last spring and she's shown a ton of maturity and improvement this week."
After a Hannah Pietila's successful Sunday and Polo's Monday emergence, the Lady Vols will look to put it all together on Tuesday. Trailing Auburn and Wisconsin by only five strokes, Tennessee has its eyes set on making a final round push to crack the Cougar Classic top-10.
As for the rest of the field at the Cougar Classic, Clemson's Sloan Shanahan had six birdies on the day and is tied for the tournament lead with Mississippi State's Ally McDonald at 6-under par. The Tigers (-9) are competing in their first-ever tournament in the program's inaugural season and hold a six-stroke lead over MSU (-3). Overall, there were seven eagles with four made on the par-5 No. 15. The opening groups played four and a half hours, while the later groups took over an hour longer due to the heat.
Tennessee will tee off at 9:00 a.m. ET in the tournament's final round.
