Head Coach Judi Pavon's golf team opened up its season with a rough start at the 2003 NCAA Fall Preview in Opelika, Ala. to finish in 17th after a 314 total during the first round of play. Auburn took advantage of its home course by jumping out to a one shot lead over the Duke Blue Devils with a 286. Individually, Duke's Brittany Lang leads the field with a five-under 67.
Team captain Jessica Shepley (Oakville, Ontario, Canada) led orange-clad golfers with a two-over 74 to tie for 21st, while senior Mary Jan Fernandez (Henderson, Nev.) notched a six-over 78 for a 53rd-place tie. Junior Teesha Ash (Chattanooga, Tenn.) turned in a 62nd-place-tying 79, while freshman Holly Cantwell (Morristown, Tenn.) and sophomore Violeta Retamoza (Aguascalientes, Mexico) recorded 83s to tie for 83rd place.
