Head Coach Judi Pavon's golf team improved during the second day of competition at the 2003 NCAA Fall Preview in Opelika, Ala., as the Lady Vols shaved 10 strokes off their day one score to finish with an 18th-place 618 (314-304). Arizona overtook first-day leader Auburn with a two-day 581 (289-292), which is two shots ahead of the Lady Tigers' 583 (286-297). Individually, Arizona's Cassandra Kirkland fired a par round to take a one-shot lead over teammate Erica Blasberg as Kirkland posted a two-round 140 (68-72).
As for Tennessee, team captain Jessica Shepley (Oakville, Ontario, Canada) still leads the orange-clad crew with a two-day 150 (74-76) to tie for 28th place, while senior Mary Jan Fernandez (Henderson, Nev.) posted UT's best round of the day with a two-over 74 to tie for 38th with a two-day 152 (78-74). Sophomore Violeta Retamoza (Aguascalientes, Mexico) moved up to a 72nd-place tie with a 159 (83-76), while freshman Holly Cantwell (Morristown, Tenn.) turned in a 161 (83-78) to finish tied for 76th. Junior Teesha Ash (Chattanooga, Tenn.) rounded out the Lady Vol effort with an 80th-place-tying 163 (79-84).
UT concludes the invitational Sunday with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. CT, before heading to Charlotte, N.C. for the Franklin Street Trust Lady Tar Heel Invitational over Oct. 3-5.
