KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -Chessey Thomas and AJ Newell each recorded rounds under par to lead the 7th-ranked Tennessee women's golf team during the final round of competition Tuesday at the Cougar Classic hosted by the College of Charleston.

The Lady Vols finished tied for seventh at the annual event held at Yeamans Hall in Hanahan, S.C., featured five of the preseason top 10 teams in the country.

"Overall we played well this week," head coach Judi Pavon said. "We would have liked to have shot closer to the lead, but without Nathalie [Mansson] in the lineup we would have had to be flawless to challenge for the lead. We were pretty nervous the first couple days, but played more confidently today."

The Big Orange totaled 289-292-286=867 (+3) over three days at the event, posting the strongest round as a team in the final day of competition.

LSU took the team title with a three-day total of 15-under 848, while the Tigers' Austin Ernst nabbed a final round 67 en route to medalist honors (67-69-67=203). Tennessee's Erica Popson, who began the day atop the individual leaderboard, finished second, recording a 9-under (66-69-72=207) for the tournament.

Thomas was even most of the day before birdieing two of the final three holes to finish two under. Her day three score catapulted her into a tie for 38th place after beginning the day tied for forty-seventh. The sophomore from Spokane, Wash., finished with a 75-75-70=220 (+4) tally.

Newell, a freshman, recorded her first career round of par or better Tuesday, finishing with a one-under 71. Her three day total (76-77-71=224) earned her 57th place overall.

"Chessey hit the ball well all three days, and finally got some putts to drop today to have a great round," Pavon said. "And AJ just got more comfortable each day and played more like her normal self today."

Junior Sara Monberg tied with Thomas for 38th with a 220 (+4) total for the tournament, while sophomore Kaitlyn Rohrback nabbed a share of 52nd place after carding a 223 (+7) at the Classic.

Tennessee returns to action Sept. 23-24 at the Mason Rudolph Fall Preview in Nashville, Tenn.
