CHAPEL HILL, N.C.

Head Coach Judi Pavon's golf squad celebrated its chief's 100th round at the helm of the Lady Vols in spectacular fashion as the orange clads scorched Finley Golf Course to the tune of a one-over 289. The performance moved UT into sole possession of third place with a 596 (307-289) after the second day of the 2003 Franklin Street Partners Lady Tar Heel Invitational in Chapel Hill, N.C. The effort tied for the seventh-best round in Tennessee history and helped the Big Orange break a nine-round streak of scores in the 300s dating back to last year's first round of the Southeastern Conference Championships. UT only trails second-place Florida by one stroke. Leading the field, Duke had another strong outing to open up a 31-shot lead over the field with a 12-under 564 (279-285). Individually, Elizabeth Janangelo of Duke maintained her lead with a six-under 138 (66-72).

Team captain Jessica Shepley (Oakville, Ontario, Canada) fired the low round of the day with a personal-best four-under 68, which tied for the sixth-best round in UT history. Her two-day fifth-place 144 (76-68) total shaved a shot off her previous career-low of 145 set in the 2002 Lady Kat Invitational. Sophomore Violeta Retamoza (Aguascalientes, Mexico) demonstrated a strong heart and great determination as she gutted out an amazing even-par 72 on the day. Even more telling of a rising maturity is that after Retamoza's withdrawal due to injury during the first round, her score cannot help her move up the individual standings at the Lady Tar Heel.

Seniors Mary Jan Fernandez (Henderson, Nev.) and Tai Perry (Unionville, Pa.) rounded out UT scoring during an outstanding second round. Fernandez fired a one-over 73 to finish with a 13th-place-tying 149 (76-73), while Perry carded a second-consecutive four-over 76 for a two-round 152 (76-76) to tie for 21st place. Junior Teesha Ash (Chattanooga, Tenn.) closed out the Tennessee effort with a two-day 34th-place 159 (79-80).

UT concludes the invitational Sunday with a shotgun start at approximately 9:15 a.m. ET, before hosting the Mercedes-Benz Women's Collegiate Championships over Oct. 19-21 at Fox Den Country Club.
