ATHENS, Ga. -- The No. 23 Tennessee women's golf team is in a tie for 14th in an elite field of 18 squads after first-round action at the Liz Murphey Fall Preview in Athens, Ga.
Senior Erica Popson leads the Big Orange after shooting 1-over par 73, putting her in a tie for 14th individually. Chessey Thomas follows in a tie for 32nd with a 3-over par 75. Thomas was the only UT golfer to card a sub-par nine-hole total, which she shot on the back nine. The Spokane, Wash., native was one of only two players in the tournament to shoot an eagle in the first round.
"We played a good first nine today, but didn't score very well on our second nine (the front 9)," head coach Judi Pavon said. "We hit the ball pretty well but left some putts out there. We just need to be a little tougher and more determined to play well."
No. 13 Auburn holds the lead after the first day, shooting 1-under par 287. UCLA follows with a 6-over par 294 card, while No. 8 USC and Denver are tied for third at 7-over par 295.
The Lady Vols tee off at 8:50 a.m. Saturday morning for second-round competition. The team is paired with Duke and Purdue.
