ATHENS, Ga. -- After shooting the third-lowest team score in the second round, the Tennessee women's golf team has jumped up six spots in the team standings at the Liz Murphey Fall Preview in Athens, Ga.
The Lady Vols fired a 7-over par 295 second-day total to move up into a tie for eighth, as No. 13 Auburn (+5), No. 21 Alabama (+1) and No. 27 North Carolina (+1) were the only three teams to shoot a better second round total than UT.
"We stayed tougher out there today," head coach Judi Pavon said. "After not a great start everyone hung in there, especially AJ and Chessey. As a team we shot even on our second 9 (the front) which was a big improvement over yesterday. The scores are very bunched up from fourth place down, so we will need to keep focused and have another solid round tomorrow."
Senior Erica Popson continues to pace the Big Orange, shooting even-par Saturday. She currently sits in a tie for 10th at even-par 145, five strokes off the individual lead.
Junior Chessey Thomas and sophomore AJ Newell both recorded 2-over par 74 on the day, while Sara Monberg shot 3-over par 75, carding five birdies. Freshman Ashlee Pickerell rounds out the Lady Vols' scores shooting 9-over par 81.
Auburn continues to hold the lead after the second round, with Alabama in second and North Carolina in third.
Tennessee tees off for the final round at 8:00 a.m. Sunday morning with Oklahoma and Duke.
