AUSTIN, Texas - The Tennessee women's golf team struggled to find its footing deep in the heart of Texas. Three weather delays pushed tee times back until 1 p.m. CT on Sunday. Once the Lady Vols finally got on the course, nothing seemed to click.

"Today was a disappointing round," head coach Judi Pavon said. "We got off to a good start, but didn't take advantage on the last few holes of some birdie opportunities. We will meet tonight and get ready for a better day tomorrow."

Tennessee connected on a total of seven birdies en route to a first round score of 299 (+11). The rough first day dropped the Lady Vols back into a tie for 13th with Texas and New Mexico.

Despite the tough start, freshman Hannah Pietila held her own at the University of Texas Golf Club. The Brighton, Mich., native accounted for three of the team's birdies and finished at even par 72.

"Hannah had a solid round for us today," Pavon said.

A pair of Lady Vol juniors also showed flashes of promise on Sunday. AJ Newell and Daeun Song both shot a 75 (+3) which put them in a tie for 51st.

"I felt like I played solid," Newell said. "I gave myself a lot of great opportunities but couldn't convert for a birdie. I'm going to try to keep doing the same things tomorrow and hopefully get a few more putts to drop. If the team plays well the next few days, that would be a great thing for us."

Tennessee hopes to bounce back and improve on Monday, getting production from all five starters. The Lady Vols will have their opportunity when they tee off bright and early at 8:54 a.m. CT.
