KNOXVILLE, Tenn.

No. 6 University of Tennessee Lady Vol golf squad stayed in 11th-place at the 2002 Mercedes-Benz Women's Collegiate Championships at Gettysvue Polo, Golf and Country Club with a second-day 308 for a two-day total of 627 (319-308). Florida carded a 290, which is the third-lowest team round in tournament history, to make a run and tie the Swedish Junior National team for first-place with a two-day 603 (313-290). North Carolina's Ashley Prange held onto a slim one-shot leading 142 with a second-day 2-under 70. Also of note, Florida's Jeanne Cho moved into a third-place tie with the fourth-lowest round in event history with a 4-under 68.

"Jessica played well today." Head Coach Judi Pavon said. "I'm proud of her performance and it's great to know that we can count on her to score everyday."

Individually, team captain Jessica Shepley (Oakville, Ontario) paced the team with an even-par 72, which is her fifth career par-or-under round and ties her for seventh-place in program history. Shepley pushed her two-day total to 150 and moved into an 11th-place tie with Northwestern's Ina Kim. Freshman Golda Johansson (Lund, Sweden) fired a 6-over 79 to accumulate a second-day, 20th-place tying 153. Junior Mary Jan Fernandez (Henderson, Nev.) carded a 5-over 77 to improve her two-day total to 160 for a tie for 45th-place, while Tai Perry (Unionville, Pa.) recorded an 8-over 80 in the second day of competition. Ryan Kirk (Hixson, Tenn.) rounded out UT scoring with a 9-over 81 for a two-day 165 66th-place tying total.

 

 

"I'm happy that I played well today." Shepley said. "I played a lot better than yesterday and minimized my mistakes as well as kept the ball in play." The Lady Vol golf squad closes out the sixth-annual Mercedes-Benz Women's Collegiate Championships on Sunday with a 9:00 a.m. shotgun start.
