Fernandez completes another solid day for the Lady Vols.
Oct. 27, 2001
A day after battling the toughest conditions the Lady Vols have ever faced as a team, the Orange and White roared back with a second-round 309 and took over first place at the first-ever Alabama Capstone Intercollegiate. Yesterday, UT battled the weather and the course en route to firing a 335 and finding themselves in fifth place. Tennessee leads Minnesota, the day one leader, by eight strokes.
Leading the way for the Orange and White is sophomore Mary Jan Fernandez (Henderson, Nev.) who is tied for first with Alabama's Sarah Johnston. Fernandez fired the low round of the tournament with a 3-over 75 to go along with her first round 79 for a total of 154. The sophomore transfer is playing in her first tournament as a member of the Lady Vols after playing in the Mercedes Championships two weeks ago as an individual.
Senior Young-A Yang (Tae-Gu City, South Korea) is in sixth place with a 160. Fellow senior Tina Schneeberger (WR-Neustadt, Austria) shot a second round 78 to go with her day one 86 for a total of 164 to sit in 19th place. Sophomore Tai Perry (Unionville, Pa.) made the biggest jump of the day for the Orange and White as she bested her day one total of 88 by ten strokes and is tied for 24th with a 166. Freshman Jessica Shepley (Oakville, Ont.) has a two-day total of 169 and is 34th. Senior Carrie Cole (Mansfield, Texas) is playing as an individual and has recorded a 178.
The Lady Vols will look to widen their lead tomorrow and take home the first title in Capstone Intercollegiate history.
