SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The Tennessee women's golf team battled back from a slow start to finish strong at The Alamo Invitational. The Lady Vols competed against some of the nation's best programs and managed to stay in contention after the first day, sitting just five strokes back of fifth place.

"We played pretty well today," head coach Judi Pavon said. "Nobody made any big mistakes and we had some nice birdies near the end of the round."

Tennessee connected on a total of fourteen birdies en route to a first round score of 290 (+2). After the first day, the Lady Vols are tied for tenth with Louisville and Tulane.

"AJ and Lucia were solid at even par and Chessey, Hannah and Emmie's 73s were good rounds today," Pavon said. "Other than one bad hole, Teleri played well in her first start for the team. We didn't have anyone shoot low which would have made the different today."

AJ Newell and Lucia Polo led the Lady Vols with an even par 72. Both golfers ended on a high note, combining for five birdies on the back nine and tying for 27th. Back from her LPGA qualifying school, senior Chessey Thomas dropped in four birdies to finish with a 73 (+1). The Pietila sisters (Hannah and Emmie) also shot a 73 (+1) with Emmie competing as an individual in the tournament. Thomas and both Pietila sisters finished tied for 39th.

Knoxville native Teleri Hughes rounded out the Lady Vol lineup shooting a 76 (+4). The freshman made the first start of her collegiate career.

Tennessee hopes to gain ground on its competition on Monday when they tee off bright and early at 8:30 a.m. CT from the tenth tee box.
