Nov. 2, 2002
AUBURN, Ala.
The No. 11 University of Tennessee Lady Vol golf team kept the pressure on the rest of the field at the 2002 Auburn Tiger Derby after firing a 297 to register the second-lowest two-day total in program and Tiger Derby history with a 586 (289-297). UT currently leads No. 7 Texas and tournament host No. 3 Auburn by two shots apiece as the Longhorns (294-294) and Tigers (291-297) both carded two-day 588s. Georgia's Summer Sirmons opened up a one shot lead over Auburn's Diana Ramage and Arizona's Erica Blasberg with a two-day 3-under 141 (69-72).
Freshman Golda Johansson (Lund, Sweden) trails Sirmons by two shots with a two-day 1-under 143, which is tied for the seventh-lowest 36-hole total in program history, to claim sole possession of fourth place. Freshman Violeta Retamoza (Aquascalientes, Mexico) matched her career-low round with a 2-under 70 to accumulate a two-day even-par 144 and blitz the field to move up 16 spots into a fifth-place tie with a pair of golfers. Team captain Jessica Shepley (Oakville, Ontario) sits in a 13th-place tie after a two-day 3-over 147. Junior Tai Perry (Unionville, Pa.) carded a two-day 8-over 152 to tie for 31st, while Mary Jan Fernandez (Henderson, Nev.) recorded a two-day 11-over 155 to tie for 46th.
The Lady Vols are facing their toughest test to date this weekend as the
Tiger Derby features the top seven teams in the country (No. 1 Duke, No. 2
Arizona, No. 3 Auburn, No. 4 Oklahoma State, No. 5 Vanderbilt, No. 6 Florida
and No. 7 Texas) and a total of 10 of the Top 25 ranked schools in the
nation (No. 9 Southern California, No. 12 Georgia and No. 20 South
Carolina).
