For the third-straight year, Head Coach Judi Pavon's golf squad finished the fall season with a top-three effort after closing out the 2003 Las Vegas Founders Women's Collegiate Showdown with an 887 (296-295-296) over the three-day event. New Mexico took the team title with an incredible five-over 869 (288-288-293), while Lobo Katrina Leckovic earned New Mexico a clean sweep of the tourney hardware with a three-under 213 (69-72-72).
As for the Big Orange, junior Teesha Ash (Chattanooga, Tenn.) fired a three-over 219 (73-72-74) to pace the orange-clad contingent and finish in a tie for sixth place. Sophomore Violeta Retamoza (Aguascalientes, Mexico) shook off the pain of an injury again with an eighth-place-tying 220 (74-69-77), while team captain Jessica Shepley (Oakville, Ontario, Canada) posted a 225 (74-77-74) to take 21st place at the tournament. Seniors Mary Jan Fernandez (Henderson, Nev.) and Tai Perry (Unionville, Pa.) rounded out the UT effort in Las Vegas with a pair of 227s to finish tied for 26th place. As an individual, freshman Holly Cantwell (Morristown, Tenn.) tied for 32nd place with a 229 (73-78-78).
Tennessee has now concluded its fall season. The Lady Vols will open the spring season over Feb. 23-25, 2004, at the Arizona National Golf Club in Tucson, Ariz.
