HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla.- The sixth-seeded Lady Vol golf squad fell to 11th-seeded Wake Forest in the opening round of the Hooters Match Play Championship on Sunday by a final margin of 3-2. It was a day of upsets at the event, as the fifth and seventh seeds also fell.

For the Big Orange, Violeta Retamoza (Aguascalientes, Mexico) and Jessica Shepley (Oakville, Ontario) were victorious on the day. Retamoza defeated Ashley Hoagland two-up, while the Big Orange captain knocked off Mandy Goins three and two.

Sarah Bonner-Shanks (Kingsport, Tenn.), seeing her first action as a Lady Vol, fell to Christine Hallstrom five and four. Freshman Marci Turner (Tompkinsville, Ky.) lost to Maggie Simons by a final margin of three and two, while Golda Johansson (Lund, Sweden) was edged one-up by Laura Crawford. Tennessee then started play in the consolation bracket and lead 14th-seeded Texas A&M, 4-1. Play was suspended due to darkness and will resume at 8 a.m. Monday with the third round beginning an hour after the completion of the second round.
