Nov. 15, 2004

HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. - The sixth-seeded Lady Vol golf team went 1-1 on the day at the Hooters Match Play Championships, defeating 14th-seeded Texas A&M, 3-2, and falling on a scorecard playoff to seventh-seeded New Mexico, 2-2-1.

In the contest against the A&M, UT used victories from Marci Turner (Tompkinsville, Ky.), Golda Johansson (Lund, Sweden) and Jessica Shepley (Oakville, Ontario) to secure the win. Turner defeated Brenda Norris four and two, Johansson topped Jacquelyn Nemcik three and one while the captain Shepley scored a five and three win over Ashley Frey. Teesha Ash (Chattanooga, Tenn.) fell to Ashley Knoll two and one, and preseason All-American Violeta Retamoza (Aguascalientes, Mexico) was edged one-up by Christa Spedding.

With the win, UT advanced to the third round of the consolation bracket. The second-match of the day for the Orange and White finished 2-2-1, with both UT and New Mexico winning and losing a pair of matches, while the match between Turner and Christine Fernandez was halved. Retamoza rebounded from her loss to Spedding by dominating New Mexico's Christina Spence with a six and four victory. Johansson won for the second time on the day, knocking off Ashley Rollins two and one. Shepley suffered her first loss of the event, falling six and five to Kailin Downs while Ash fell two and one for the second-straight-match, this time to Giselle Claux.

The fall portion of the golf schedule has now been completed, and the Big Orange will be back in action on February 21, 2005 at the Arizona Wildcat Invitational
