KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The Tennessee Lady Vol golf team kicks off the 2013 spring season at the inaugural Florida State Match-Up Tournament. The 54-hole event takes place over the course of three days at the par-72, 7,172-yard SouthWood Golf Club in Tallahassee, Fla.
"We are ready to get going this spring after a kind of disappointing fall," head coach Judi Pavon said. "We have two new players on our roster which will be a big help to keep us competitive all spring. I'm excited about our line-up."
Representing the Lady Vols in the Sunshine State will be senior Erica Popson, sophomore AJ Newell, junior Chessey Thomas, sophomore Daeun Song and senior Sara Monberg. It will be the first team tournament Song will compete in for Tennessee after she participated in the Lady Bulldog Individual Championship earlier this month.
"Daeun is a new face and has played well in qualifying, as have all the girls," Pavon said. "This will be a good tournament to see how prepared we are after the winter off-season and to see what we need to work on to prepare for the other upcoming events."
The Match-Up Tournament has a unique format that consists of six teams, whose head coaches will be partnering with former assistant coaches who are now coaching their own programs.
"This tournament is a fun new format having a partner team that we will be paired with during the first and second rounds, so hopefully it will be a little bit more of a relaxing environment to begin the season," Pavon said.
UT will be paired with UTSA, whose head coach is Carrie Parnaby, a former Tennessee golfer from 1998-2002. Parnaby spent 2002-03 as a student assistant coach and then 2004-08 as an assistant coach with the Lady Vols before taking over as head coach at UTSA.
The twelve teams will tee off in twosomes for the first two rounds and then in a final round shotgun in threesomes. The complete list of twosomes includes: Florida State/Texas A&M, Oklahoma/Georgia, Notre Dame/Michigan, Tennessee/UTSA, Furman/Kansas, and UNC Greensboro/UNC Wilmington. Tennessee will tee off at 8:30 a.m. ET from the 10th tee.
The Match-Up portion of the tournament will be determined by taking the best four scores from the partners (which is a total of 10 players) and the worst score to make the Match-Up team total. At the end of the tournament, the teams with the lowest score will win the Match-Up. An individual champion, along with a team champion, will be crowned.
Live scoring will be available at golfstat.com.
