RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico – With one round left in the Lady Puerto Rico Classic in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico, the 12th-ranked Lady Vol golf team is tied for ninth with a team score of 599. The Lady Vols are being led by sophomore Angela Oh, who carded two rounds of two-over-par 74s to tie for 13th.
“We are a little rusty after a long offseason and it is showing up in the details,” head coach Judi Pavon said. “We are playing against quite a few teams that have already competed, so that makes a difference. We are not playing as poorly as our place suggests so I feel good about our chances to have a good round tomorrow.”
In the field of 18 at the Coco Beach Golf Course, six are ranked in the nation’s top 25 according to Golfstat. UT is joined in the top-25 by No. 6 Arkansas, No. 10 Georgia, No. 11 Purdue, No. 14 Kent State and No. 19 Alabama.
Making the biggest jump in the rankings for the Lady Vols was junior Nicole Smith. Smith came back from a first-round score of 78 to record an even-par 72 today. She moved from 62nd to 25th place. Sophomore Diana Cantú was leading the team in 11th place yesterday, but fell to 19th after shooting a 76 today. Senior Marci Turner followed a first-round score of 74 with a 78 today. Her 36-hole total of 152 puts the senior in a tie for 41st. Freshman Rebecca Watson improved upon her score of 82 yesterday by registering an 80 today. She is currently in 85th place.
Arkansas’ Stacy Lewis remains in first with a six-under-par 138 over two days. Kent State moved up to first with a 586 team total.
The Lady Vols will tee from holes 10, 11 and 12 beginning at 8 a.m. ET.
