KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The Tennessee women's golf team will head to Gainesville, Fla., for the NCAA East Regional Tournament from May 7-9, the NCAA announced on Monday afternoon.
A field of 63 teams and nine individuals were selected for the NCAA field, which will consist of three 54-hole regional tournaments and a 72-hole NCAA Championship.
This is the 17th consecutive NCAA Tournament selection for the Lady Vols, who have competed at an NCAA Regional every year since the program's first season in 1992-93.
The Lady Vols earned the seventh-seed in the East region, and will be one of 21 teams competing at the par- 70, 6,044-yard Mark Bostick Golf Course at the University of Florida.
The top eight teams and two individuals in each region will advance from regional competition to the NCAA Women's Golf Championships in Owings Mills, Md., from May 19-22. The NCAAs are hosted by Georgetown and will be played at Caves Valley Golf Club.
The other two regional sites are Columbus, Ohio, and Tempe, Ariz.
The Lady Vols will be looking to make their fifth NCAA Championships appearance in six years this season by performing well in Gainesville.
UT placed 16th at the 2008 NCAA East Regional, ending a string of four consecutive national championships berths.
The Lady Vols are coming off of a fourth-place finish at the SEC Championship from April 17-19, and their outstanding play this spring puts the squad in contention for their third regional title in program history.
"We feel like this field is one where we can compete for the top spot," Lady Vol head coach Judi Pavon said. "We have had a solid spring and we are happy the committee recognized that by giving us the seventh-seed. We've beat every team in our field except for Virginia and Alabama. Our goal is to win."
Tennessee is one of eight SEC teams competing in the East Regional. Other SEC teams in the field are: conference champion Auburn (No. 2 seed), Alabama (No. 3), Vanderbilt (No. 8), Georgia (No. 9), Florida (No. 11), Mississippi (No. 13) and South Carolina (No. 14).
The Lady Vols captured the 2006 East Regional title and tied for the tournament crown at the 2005 West Regional.
Tennessee is currently ranked No. 26 in the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index, No. 29 by Golfstat and received the 31st most votes in the latest Golf World/NGCA Coaches' poll.
