ALL-SEC HONOREES
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Lady Vol freshman golfer AJ Newell captured league recognition Friday, as the Southeastern Conference announced its All-SEC honors for women's golf.
Newell, who has earned a spot in the Tennessee lineup for every tournament in 2011-12, was named to the SEC All-Freshman Team.
Vanderbilt's Marina Alex was named the SEC Player of the Year, while Alabama's Mic Potter and Auburn's Kim Evans shared SEC Coach of the Year laurels.
Camilla Hedberg of Florida was named SEC Freshman of the Year and Alabama senior Brooke Pancake claimed SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors for the second consecutive season.
Newell has a 76.31 stroke average and four par or better rounds this season. She took 55th at the conference tournament, but has two top-15 performances this spring.
The Tampa, Fla., native will join juniors Erica Popson and Sara Monberg along with senior Nathalie Mansson and sophomore Chessey Thomas in the lineup for the NCAA postseason, starting at the Central Regional in Columbus, Ohio, next week.
