Senior Erica Popson
CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Senior Erica Popson carded a team-best 1-over par 73 to pace Tennessee in its opening round of the season at the 2012 Cougar Classic on Sunday.
Popson bounced back from a quadruple bogey on the sixth hole and is tied with a group in 33rd place. She finished with four birdies on the day.
"Erica had a good round going, but made a bad swing on 6 and ended up with a quadruple bogey, which was a killer," head coach Judi Pavon said. "She came back with two birdies in the next three holes to really show some determination."
The Lady Vols sit in 13th place in an elite field of 24 teams after posting an opening round of 8-over par 296. A total of six teams posted even par or better.
"We had an okay round today," Pavon said. " Our ball striking was really solid but we had some trouble with the speed of the greens. We got some good work done after the round to prepare for tomorrow."
USC leads the field after day one with a 3-under par 285 total and holds a one-shot lead over second-place Duke, Virginia and Florida (286).
UT will tee off at 11:50 a.m. on Monday in the second of three rounds. The Big Orange will be paired with Auburn and South Carolina.
