Day Two Results | Live ResultsCHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Going into the final round of the Tar Heel Invitational, the University of Tennessee golf team is in the top spot, three strokes ahead No.2 Duke, and five ahead of No. 11 Georgia. The Lady Vols took eight strokes off their first round score of 297 with a 289 today to jump into the No. 1 spot. Sophomores Diana Cantú and Angela Oh are leading the team.
“Today was a great day for our team,” Lady Vol Head Coach Judi Pavon said. “We knew the scores would be better today and the players responded by stepping up their games. Diana was outstanding today, and Marci [Turner] got her game figured out. In addition, Angela, Nicole [Smith] and Ginny [Brown] all had solid rounds that helped the team move into the lead.”
Cantú went from tying for 14th to a tie for fourth with a personal-best 69 today. The Monterrey, Mexico, native shot a 74 yesterday to bring her 36-hole total to a one-under-par 143. She carded six birdies at the UNC Finley Golf Course today. Cantú’s classmate, Oh, is currently in eighth after adding a round of 74 to yesterday’s score of 70.
Smith shot a 75 today after her 74, yesterday. She added five birdies to her five birdies in round one to tie for 20th. Senior Turner advanced from t63rd to a tie for 27th after signing her card with a one-under-par 71. She was even on 15 holes today and made two birdies. Sophomore Brown took eight strokes off her 84 in round one to bring her up to t80th.
The Lady Vols are facing a field of eight teams that are ranked in the top 20, including defending national champion, Duke. No. 12 Tennessee is currently ahead of four teams ranked higher in the polls.
The Lady Vols will start on the front nine holes tomorrow at 9:15 a.m.
