Golfers Finish 4th at Hooters Match Play

ORLANDO, Fla. – On the final day of the 2007 Hooters Match Play Tournament at the Ginn Reunion Resort, the No. 10 Lady Vol golf team fell to No. 5 Florida, 3-1-1, to conclude the three-day competition in fourth place. Fifth-seeded Tennessee defeated Michigan State and Texas A&M, prior to its meeting with eventual champion and top-seeded Duke, in the semifinals. Duke took the top position over the No. 6 seed Georgia, while the second-seeded Florida Lady Gators finished third.

“We really wanted to get a win against Florida,” Lady Vol Head Coach Judi Pavon said. “The team fought for its matches, but Florida made some great putts and good up-and-downs to ensure the win.”

In the first round, Lady Vols Nicole Smith and Rebecca Watson recorded wins over their Michigan State opponents as UT advanced in a tiebreaker, 2-2-1. Round two saw Smith, Diana Cantú and Ginny Brown defeat their Aggie counterparts en route to a 3-2-0 victory in favor of the Big Orange. When face-to-face with the Duke Blue Devils, Cantú came out with her second win of the tournament, while Watson was all-square with her opponent after 18 holes, but lost in 20.

In this afternoon’s competition with the Lady Gators, Cantú was once again victorious, as she defeated Jessica Yadloczky 2 and 1. Smith came back from being down two with three holes left to finish all-square with Ornella Jouven. Ingram lost to Tiffany Chudy, 5 and 4, while Brown dropped to Sandra Gal, 3 and 2. Watson and Brittany Nelson played all 18 holes before Nelson finished 1-up.

“Diana played really well this week to get three wins in her matches,” Pavon said. “Her opponent [today] made three birdies in a row early in the match, so she really showed some pride by fighting back for the win.

“This was a new lineup for us,” Pavon said. “It was good to see some different players in action to end our fall season.”

Lady Vols Marci Turner and Angela Oh did not join the team in Orlando, as they are competing at the Duramed FUTURES Tour 2008 Qualifying Tournament in Lakeland, Fla., from Nov. 6-9.

The Hooters Match Play Tournament marks the end of the fall campaign for the Lady Vols. They will pick up the spring portion of their schedule at the Puerto Rico Invitational, Feb. 24-26, 2008.
