ORLANDO, Fla. - Bolstered by a 4-under 68 in the first round last Friday, future Lady Vol Erica Popson captured the Florida Junior Tour (FJT) Major on Sunday at Hunter's Creek Golf Club.
Popson, of Davenport, Fla., followed the 68 with rounds of 71 and 73 en route to her 4-under 212 total. The only competitor under par, she won the inaugural tournament by 11 strokes.
Popson has been 2008 FJT Player of the Year as well as the Florida State Women's Golf Association Junior Player of the Year. She was also the 2007 Girls16-18 FJT points champion and the winner of the FJT West Bay event this season.
Popson, who is ranked as the 37th best junior in the country according to the Golfweek/Titleist performance index, officially signed with the Lady Vol golf team in November after committing last summer.
She attends Ridge Community High School, where she was a four-time individual state qualifier and a two-time Polk County Player of the Year. On Oct. 29, she finished tied for third with a score of 2-under 142 (71-71) at the Florida Class 1A state golf championship.
Denmark-native Sara Monberg joins Popson as the Orange and White's signees for the class of 2009. The pair is expected to make an immediate impact next fall.
The Lady Vol golf team is in the midst of its winter training after wrapping up its fall season with a 2-1 record at the Hooters Collegiate Match Play Championship from Nov. 2-4. UT will be back in action on Feb. 8 at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
