KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - After just three races were completed, strong winds forced the cancellation of the Lady Vols' season-opening regatta versus Michigan State and Notre Dame on Fort Loudon Lake on Saturday. Tennessee was victorious in two of the three races completed, highlighted by the 10th-ranked Varsity 8+ shell finishing first.
"Our venue is always at the whim of the weather," Lady Vol head coach Lisa Glenn said. "Strong headwinds caused the water to be very rough. The coaches were uncomfortable with the conditions on the water and canceled the rest of the regatta for the safety of the student-athletes."
The Lady Vols' V8+ shell comprised of Molly Oellerich (cox.), Kaitlin Bargreen, Lauren Wells, Rachel Mayberry, Chelsea Pemberton, Dana Forbes, McKenzie Craig, Andrea Bagwell and Elizabeth Schwartz, finished the course in 5:10.34, ahead of No. 16 Michigan State (5:17.12) and No. 11 Notre Dame (5:32.15).
Michigan State won the second race of the afternoon, the Novice 8+, in a time of 5:43.96, followed by Notre Dame (6:00.74) and Tennessee (6:02.61). In the final event of the regatta, UT prevailed in the Varsity 4+, as the crew of Ashley Butturini (cox.), Kathryn Payne, Olivia Marnell, Jennifer Gerlach and Brittany Hunley, finished in 6:13.04, ahead of second-place Notre Dame (6:28.04). Michigan State did not finish the race, as its entrant was swamped.
"I was really impressed with our mind set," Glenn said. "We were prepared and determined and ready to go. We are disappointed the weather did not comply."
The Lady Vols will return to action next Saturday, March 19, playing host to Minnesota. Race time is scheduled for 10 a.m., at the Lady Vol Boathouse on Lake Loudon.
