Tennessee Wins Four On Day One At ORCI

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. - During a beautiful and warm Saturday on Melton Hill Lake, the Tennessee rowing program took to the water to race in the third annual Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational, the Lady Volunteers finished the first day of racing winning four of their 10 races.

To being the day the Lady Vols proved their hard work during the offseason is paying off. Tennessee came off the start with strength and quickness in the first varsity eight. Against the University of Alabama and the University of Dayton, the Lady Vols held onto the lead throughout the entire race to cross the finish line in 6 minutes and 49.2 seconds, a little over five seconds ahead of the Crimson Tide.

The first varsity four carried the momentum from the team's first victory onto the second race, against Alabama the Big Orange dominated winning by a little over 20 seconds, crossing the finish line in 7 minutes and 49.8 seconds.

Squaring off with Virginia, Alabama and Dayton, the novice eights took to the water for their first official race of the spring season. The Lady Vols raced hard to complete the course in 7 minutes and 42.2 seconds falling to the Cavaliers and Crimson Tide but topping the Flyers of Dayton, who raced their third varsity eight against the novices.

Tennessee's second varsity right held their own on the water as well, closing their first place finish against Alabama with over a 15-second lead, crossing the finish line in 7 minutes and 6.8 seconds.

To close out the morning of racing, the Lady Volunteers raced their second varsity four against the Crimson Tide, falling to them in a close race throughout the entire 2,000-meter course. The Big Orange finished with a time of 8 minutes and 16.8 seconds.

After a break off the water, the Tennessee Rowing team returned to racing with the first varsity eight against Michigan State and the lightweight crew of Wisconsin. In a tight race with the Spartans, the Lady Vols fell to MSU with a time of 6 minutes and 50.7 seconds.

The first varsity four was victorious for the second time today. By a margin of three seconds against Michigan State, the Big Orange secured the first place slot with a time of 7 minutes and 47.5 seconds.

The novice eight finished fourth against Virginia, Michigan State and Louisville with a time of 8 minutes and 11.54 seconds in their second race of the day.

Falling to Michigan State by less than 3 seconds, Tennessee's second varsity eight secured the second place slot, crossing the finish line in 7 minutes and 4.9 seconds ahead of Wisconsin's lightweight crew.

To finish the first day of racing at the Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational, the Lady Vols' second varsity four completed the course with a time of 8 minutes and 49.86 seconds behind the Spartans of Michigan State.

The Lady Vols will return to the water for another set of races on Melton Hill Lake at 11:54 AM, beginning with the varsity eights against Kansas, Wisconsin and West Virginia.
