The Lady Vol rowers took to the water against Notre Dame today.
March 16, 2002
A year ago, the Notre Dame rowing team came to Knoxville on St. Patrick's Day and swept every race, thus ruining the christening of the new Lady Volunteer Boathouse on Neyland Drive. This year, the Lady Vols hoped that racing the Irish a day earlier would prevent ND from using the St. Patrick's Day aura to their advantage again. Unfortunately, Notre Dame once again prevailed winning four of the five races on the Tennessee River.
"I think the most significant thing was to get on the race course and get a race under our belt," head coach Lisa Glenn said. "I would have liked to have had a better position at the beginning of the races, but I think the athletes got a lot out of this race. Notre Dame looks to be really strong in the Varsity 8+ and our goal is to be competitive with them. I'm sure we'll learn from this and take that experience into our next race."
The outcome wasn't decided until the Varsity 8+, as the teams had split the other two varsity races and the novice races are looked upon as exhibitions. ND and UT lined up knowing that the winner of the final race of the day would also be the victor in the dual regatta. Both boats stayed even until about the 1,000-meter mark as the Irish pulled away at the end and crossed the finish line at 7:07.7. The Lady Volunteer shell consisting of Shannon McMahon (cox.), Kacey Montgomery, Chelsea Pemberton, Grace Harrington, Kaitlin Bargreen, Kay Logan, Dana Forbes, Claire Newton and Kelly Kraiss finished in a time of 7:26.8.
Tennessee picked up its first-ever win over Notre Dame in the second race of the 2nd Varsity 8+ as Lizzie Brown coxed her crew of Ginny Bradley, Nicole Bold, Davida Lopez, Lindsay Sagar, Amy McIntosh, Michelle Higdon, Claire Hennesy and Mary Beth Lewis to first place in a time of 7:41.6. The Irish were 20 seconds behind at a clip of 8:01.5.
The event was not without controversy as the outcome of the first 2nd Varsity 8+ was protested as the teams crossed the finish line. The results were contested based on the fact that there was misalignment at the start of the race allowing the ND team to start a few meters ahead of the UT crew consisting of Erin Artz (coxswain), Bradley, Bold, Liz Humberd, Higdon, Mary Gruzalski, Sally BeVille, McIntosh and Lewis. That few extra meters was all the Irish needed as they crossed the finish line in 6:45.31, 6.42 seconds ahead of the Lady Vol crew. The other Notre Dame boat finished third at a clip of 6:58.19. Tennessee had the option of re-rowing the race but declined since it would have marked the third time that members of the 2nd Varsity 8+ would have competed.
The next race of the day saw ND and UT's Novice 8+ square off on the 2,000-meter course. The boats raced side by side for the first 1,500 meters, but the Fighting Irish pulled away at the end and won in a time of 7:26.4. Tennessee's crew of Jovanna Vick (cox.), Marissa Allen, McKenzie Craig, Carol Weigand, Holly McDaniel, Hillary Gilmore, Kellie Pelphrey, Melissa DiCerbo and Heather Marshall were clocked at 7:40.7 as they crossed the finish line.
The third race pitted the 2nd Novice 8+ boats and once again Notre Dame was victorious. ND's boat finished in 8:03.9, while Tracy Szymula's coxed crew of Elizabeth Hoffman, Maegan Speck, Andrea Bagwell, Tabatha Eaton, Elizabeth Freeman, Shaina Frank, Erin Pemberton and Denecia Brown finished second at a clip of 8:15.1.
Tennessee is now on spring break and will spend that time training on the Tennessee River in preparation for its dual regatta with Minnesota next Saturday, March 23rd, at 10:00 a.m., at the Lady Volunteer Boathouse.
