The Tennessee rowing team won the 2nd Varsity 8+ and Novice 8+ races in convincing fashion against visiting Minnesota on Saturday, while just being edged out at the line in the Varsity 8+.
The Lady Vols' Varsity 8+ shell fell by a half second to Minnesota in the first and most closely contested race of the day. The UT crew of Lizzie Brown (cox.), Kaitlin Bargreen, Nicole Bold, Lauren Wells, Chelsea Pemberton, Dana Forbes, Kacey Montgomery, Melissa DiCerbo and Jessica Shreder posted a time of 6:32.6 on the 2000m course to finish just behind the Golden Gophers at 6:32.1.
Tennessee bounced back in the second race, the Novice 8+, to claim victory over two Golden Gopher shells in convincing fashion. The Lady Vol squad of Maggie Wheeler (cox.), Lindsey Groves, Ariana Fitzgerald, Diane Samu, Amy McCormick, Hilary Graber, Ashley Anders, Holly Holmes and Beth Schwartz turned in a time of 7:10.7 to outpace UM crews that recorded times of 7:16.2 and 7:28.7.
UT also dominated the second Varsity 8+ competition, defeating Minnesota by over 10 seconds. Tennessee's 2nd V8+, powered by Erin Artz (cox.), Kelly Kraiss, McKenzie Craig, Andrea Bagwell, Lindsay Jones, Mary Gruzalski, Kay Logan, Amy McIntosh and Mary Beth Lewis, clocked a time of 6:59.54 to finish well ahead of Minnesota in 7:09.62.
In the final race of the day, Tennessee's Varsity 4+, comprised of Jovanna Vick (cox.), Marissa Allen, Kelly Kravitz, Hilary Gilmore and Elizabeth Freeman, fell to a pair of Minnesota shells. UM's crews recorded times of 7:46.6 and 7:54.21, while the UT clocked in at 8:01.1.
The Lady Vols will return to action on Fort Loudoun Lake once again next Saturday as Louisville pay a visit to Knoxville on March 29.
