MINNESOTA DEFEATS LADY VOL ROWING TEAM
The third Varsity 8+ team took home a victory today.

The third Varsity 8+ team took home a victory today.

March 23, 2002

KNOXVILLE, Tenn.

The Lady Volunteer rowing team spent the past week training on the water hoping to further develop its technique and increase their speed. Tennessee was able to accomplish those goals in a dual regatta against Minnesota on Saturday, unfortunately the results weren't as they expected as both UT's varsity and novice squads were each victorious in only one of the three races. The outcome was not all that disappointing, as the Orange and White margin of defeat was only three seconds in each of the two varsity races the team lost.

"Overall we took a step in the right direction, which is positive for each crew," stated head coach Lisa Glenn. "As far as the varsity goes, we implemented much of the race plan that we needed to put into practice. I am pleased with the execution of our plan. We absolutely have to get better, but that is why they have the dual season. It was good to have tighter racing this weekend, and all of the crews were faster which was really good."

For the second straight week, Tennessee captured victory in the 3rd Varsity 8+ race. The victorious coxswain was once again Lizzie Brown who piloted the crew of Davida Lopez, Sally BeVille, Dana Forbes, Michelle Higdon, Liz Humberd, Claire Newton, Claire Hennesy and Mary Beth Lewis across the finish line in a time of 7:02.9. The Golden Gophers were right on UT's tail, but were unable to make up the difference and came in second in 7:04.2.

The day kicked off with UM and UT squaring off in the 2nd Varsity 8+ race. The two crews were neck and neck as they entered the 500m mark, but the Golden Gophers used a strong push to pull away at the end and win in a time of 6:45.3. The Lady Vol crew of Shannon McMahon (coxain), Ginny Bradley, Sally BeVille, Davida Lopez, Grace Harrington, Dana Forbes, Claire Newton, Mary Gruzalski and Michelle Higdon finished right behind them at a clip of 6:48.0.

Next was the premier race of the Varsity 8+s. Minnesota had built a boat and a half lead as the two teams entered the final stretch, but Tennessee made a late push towards the finish line and fell just a few feet short as UM crossed the finish line in 6:38.5. UT's crew of Erin Artz (cox.), Kacey Montgomery, Kelly Kraiss, Lindsay Sagar, Chelsea Pemberton, Kay Logan, Katie Bargreen, Nicole Bold and Amy McIntosh was three seconds behind Minnesota in a time of 6:41.7. The silver lining to the defeat was the improvement in time from one week to the next. Last week against Notre Dame, the Varsity 8+ finished the race in 7:26.8, while this week they shaved almost 45 seconds off that time.

The third race of the day was the Novice 8+ and once again Minnesota took first. UM finished in 7:03.5 while Tennessee's boat of Jovanna Vick (cox.), McKenzie Craig, Marissa Allen, Holly McDaniel, Carol Weigand, Katie Pelphrey, Hilary Gilmore, Heather Marshall and Melissa DiCerbo took second in 7:20.7

Once the Novice 8+s finished it was time for the 2nd Novice 8+ race to start and UT did not fare any better. Minnesota built a big lead and won convincingly in a time of 7:15.3. The Lady Vols finished the 2,000m course in a time of 7:42.0 using the crew of Kristin Clark (cox.), Elizabeth Hoffman, Maegan Speck, Andrea Bagwell, Tabatha Eaton, Elizabeth Freeman, Shaina Frank, Erin Pemberton and Denecia Brown.

The last race of the day featured the Novice 4+s, and marked the first time all year that the Novice 4+ has raced. It was a successful debut for the Novice 4+ as Tennessee took home the first two slots in times of 7:37.6 and 7:44.9. Tracy Szymula's crew of Gilmore, Pelphrey, DiCerbo and Marshall finished in first while Vick's crew of Craig, Allen, McDaniel and Weigand increased their stroke rate at the end and crossed the line second. Minnesota was in third at a clip of 7:45.9

Tennessee will complete its three-regatta homestand next Saturday, March 30th, when it takes on Louisville at 10 a.m. at the Lady Volunteer Boathouse.
