KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Officially opening the season on an unseasonably cool day on Fort Loudoun Lake, the Lady Vol rowing team did its part to warm up the lake as they swept the varsity events against Louisville in a dual meet on Saturday morning.

Tennessee opened up the competition with a nine-second win over Louisville in the First Eights event. The UT crew of Stephanie Davis [cox.], Genevieve Collins, Mary Jones, Erin-Monique Shelton, Rachel Mayberry, Lauren Wells, Krista Gearing, Sarah Hutcheson and Nina Dobratz clocked a time of 6:48.41, making it eight straight wins for the Lady Vols' top Varsity 8+ shell over the last three years on their home waters.

The Second Eights followed, and the Big Orange again took a commanding 14-second victory over the Cardinals. The shell of Molly Oellerich [cox.], Renee Brittle, Caroline Howell, Alex Shishkov, Kristen Galloway, Leah Smelser, Beth Schwartz, Kate Brownlee and Jessica Ayers followed up its sweep last weekend with another strong showing, crossing the finish line in 7:08.61.

UT's top Varsity 4+ group of Kelly Todd [cox.], Giulia Guerrero, Katie Payne, Kendra Warren and Heather Hill then took a 16-second triumph, clocking in at 8:06.79. Louisville took second in 8:22.70, while the Lady Vols' "B" boat, comprised of Pam Harder [cox.], Sara Becker, Katrina von Peters, Marisa Mohan and Danielle Hmielewski, finished in third with a time of 8:38.69.

"Overall, it was a positive day for us," UT head coach Lisa Glenn said. "I always look forward to facing Louisville, because we know the competition will be good. I'm pleased with all of our varsity boats today. They made a commitment to a race plan, and they did it. There were good steps taken, but we still have work to do before our next race."

The two squads split the novice events as a light snow fell on the course, as the Cardinals won the top N8+ race in 7:35.09. Tennessee grabbed a near three second win in the second N8+ event.

The Lady Vols travel to Columbus, Ohio for a quad meet with Ohio State, Michigan and Southern California on Sat., April 8.
