LADY VOLS CLAIM THIRD IN PRELIM AT SAN DIEGO CREW CLASSIC

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Tennessee women's Varsity 8+ shell, ranked 10th in the USRowing/CRCA Varsity 8+ Coaches Poll, finished third in its preliminary heat of the Jessop-Whittier Cup at the San Diego Crew Classic on Saturday with a time of 6:55.38. No. 13 Stanford was victorious in the heat, crossing the finish line in a time of 6:53.00 followed by unranked UCLA, at 6:54.38. Tennessee narrowly edged out No. 17 Texas (6:55.87) for third place and Purdue rounded out the heat finishing fifth, in a time of 7:16.67.

"We came away from both races with some concrete areas we need to shore up for tomorrow," Lady Vol head coach Lisa Glenn said. â€oeWe need to use the race to our full advantage as we have to opportunity to learn a lot in both boats. 

In the morning's other Jessop-Whitter Cup heat, 8th-ranked California took home first place in a time of 6:46.50, followed by No. 14 USC (6:55.08), No. 16 Washington State (7:00.88), Notre Dame (7:03.21), Oregon State (7:04.87), and Loyola (7:11.26).

The Jessop-Whittier Cup, the toughest division at the Crew Classic, consists of two preliminary heats on Saturday, containing six and five boats, respectively. The top three finishers from each heat, qualified for Sunday's Grand Final, while the remaining crews will also row again on Sunday, in the Petite Final.

The Tennessee crew of Ashley Butturini (cox.), Kaitlin Bargreen, Lauren Wells, Rachel Mayberry, McKenzie Craig, Dana Forbes, Beth Schwartz, Andrea Bagwell and Sarah Hutcheson, will race in the Grand Final at 1:50 p.m. PT on Sunday. UT's competition in the final consists of No. 13 Stanford, No. 8 California, No. 14 USC, No. 16 Washington State, and UCLA. In the Petite Final, competition includes No. 17 Texas, Notre Dame, Oregon State, Loyola and Purdue.

 

 

This is UT's second-consecutive appearance in the Grand Final, as the squad finished third in the Grand Final last season.

The Lady Vols Second Varsity 8+ also participated at the San Diego Crew Classic on Saturday, as the crew of Jovanna Vick (cox.), Christina Dobratz, Krista Gearing, Melissa DiCerbo, Kristen Galloway, Marissa Allen, Olivia Marnell, Stephanie Williams and Heather Hill, finished third in Heat C of the Women's JV event. UCLA won the heat, finishing in 7:02.10, followed by USC, (7:06.40), Tennessee (7:09.57), K-State (7:16.52), Loyola (7:25.55) and San Diego (7:25.80). The Lady Vols 2V8+ will row in the Petite Final tomorrow, at 10:20 a.m.
