LADY VOLS' VARSITY FOUR PICKS UP WIN OVER MICHIGAN

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Competing in a pair of dual meets, the UT rowing team claimed a win over Michigan in the Fours race during the morning session for their only win on Griggs Reservoir on Saturday. Ohio State and Michigan both claimed two victories, as the Big Ten schools downed Tennessee and Southern California.

"We knew it would be a great racing opportunity for all boats in the program to go against three top-10 teams," said UT head coach Lisa Glenn. "We need this type of racing to get better. You can see from the morning to the afternoon how this experience helped our racing.

"I was pleased with the development we've seen in the Fours. The Eights' racing was bittersweet. In the morning, we were on our heels a bit, but in the afternoon, I saw more of what I'm looking for when we go to the line. Now we're looking forward to more great competition and doing an even better job of utilizing the experience next weekend."

The Lady Vols opened the day strong, as the second Varsity 4+ crew of Pam Harder [cox.] (Mayette, N.J.), Danielle Hmielewski (Cookeville, Tenn.), Ashley Williams (Chattanooga, Tenn.), Katrina von Peters (Chattanooga, Tenn.) and Marisa Mohan (San Diego, Calif.) finished second behind Ohio State and in front of USC with a time of 7:46.92.

The top Fours shell then took to the course and claimed a 1.13 second win over the Wolverines to open the dual meets. UT's team of Kelly Todd [cox.] (Oak Ridge, Tenn.), Giulia Guerrero (Clarksville, Tenn.), Heather Hill (Knoxville, Tenn./Catholic), Kendra Warren (Franklin, Tenn.) and Sara Becker (San Diego, Calif.) clocked a 7:31.22 to give the team a chance for the win.

But things did not stay up for the Big Orange, as both the Second Eight and First Eight boats lost by four seconds to the Maize and Blue. The second V8+ crew of Molly Oellerich [cox.] (Arlington, Va.), Renee Brittle (Dublin, Va.), Beth Schwartz (Columbia, Tenn.), Alex Shishkov (Mississauga, Ontario), Kristen Galloway (Knoxville, Tenn/Farragut), Leah Smelser (Macon, Ga.), Caroline Howell (Davenport, Iowa), Kate Brownlee (North Gower, Ontario) and Jessica Ayres (Alpharetta, Ga.) crossed the line in 6:36.91.

Tennessee's 17th-ranked first V8+ shell, comprised of Stephanie Davis [cox.] (Martin, Tenn.), Genevieve Collins (Dallas, Texas), Mary Jones (Huntsville, Ala.), Erin-Monique Shelton (Wellington, New Zealand), Rachel Mayberry (Woodbridge, Va.), Lauren Wells (London, Ontario), Krista Gearing (Fenwick, Ontario), Sarah Hutcheson (Orlando, Fla.) and Nina Dobratz (Portland, Ore.), finished the course in a time of 6:29.26, 4.48 second behind No. 10 Michigan.

The afternoon session started much like the morning, as the second V4+ shell finished second to start the period. But in head-to-head showings against the Buckeyes, the Lady Vols improved but not enough to beat the Scarlet and Gray to the line in any of the major three events. Tennessee's first Four came in 6.56 seconds behind the host at 7:26.68. The Lady Vols' second Varsity 8+ finished 5.4 seconds in back of the Buckeyes, while UT's top Eights finished 1.85 seconds in back of the nation's fifth-ranked Varsity 8+ crew.

Tennessee continues its season next weekend at the Stanford Invitational in Redwood Shores, Calif., on Friday, April 14 and Saturday, April 15. UT also plays host to the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association Regatta next Friday and Saturday on Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge.
