CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The 18th-ranked Lady Vol Varsity 8+ defeated the ninth-ranked University of Virginia V8+, as Tennessee took one of four races against the Cavaliers at the Rivanna Reservoir in Charlottesville, Va., on Saturday, marking the program's first varsity eight defeat of Virginia.

"I was very pleased with our athletes and their execution of the game plan," Lady Vol head coach Lisa Glenn said. "That kind of work will make us faster. I was pleased with the commitment that our Varsity Eight made to the game plan."

The Lady Vols were victorious in the Varsity Eight, defeating the Virginia shell in a time of 6:21.50, ahead of the Cavaliers' 6:25.70. Virginia won the Second Varsity Eight and both the Varsity Four and the Second Varsity Four races. The Lady Vol V8+ squad of Molly Oellerich (cox.), Kaitlin Bargreen, Lauren Wells, Rachel Mayberry, McKenzie Craig, Dana Forbes, Chelsea Pemberton, Andrea Bagwell and Beth Schwartz, finished in a time of 6:21.50, four seconds ahead of the Virginia varsity squad.

In addition to the Virginia races, Tennessee had two novice shells compete at the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association Regatta (S.I.R.A.) in Oak Ridge, Tenn. The first UT Novice shell won its preliminary heat on Friday, in a time of 7:21.50, advancing to Saturday's Grand Final, where the shell finished second in a time of 7:29.13, behind Central Florida (7:21.40).

The Second Novice Eight squad competed in the Women's Frosh Novice Eight prelims on Saturday, winning its opening heat in a time of 7:05.40. UT also took the Grand Final on Sunday, winning in 7:16.50, four seconds ahead of Central Florida.

The Lady Vols will return to Rocky Top next weekend to play host to No. 17 Washington State on Fort Lake Loudon in their final home regatta of the year. Competition will begin at 10 a.m. at the Lady Vol Boathouse.
