LADY VOL ROWING COMPLETES STANFORD INVITATIONAL
Genevieve Collins

Genevieve Collins

April 15, 2006

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - Tennessee concluded its west coast trip to the Stanford Invitational on a sour note, falling in all six races rowed Saturday on Redwood Shores Lagoon against Washington State and Stanford.

UT's 15th-ranked First Eights shell opened the morning against the sixth-ranked Cougars, but the crew of Stephanie Davis [cox.] (Martin, Tenn.), Genevieve Collins (Dallas, Texas), Mary Jones (Huntsville, Ala.), Erin-Monique Shelton (Wellington, New Zealand), Rachel Mayberry (Woodbridge, Va.), Lauren Wells (London, Ontario), Krista Gearing (Fenwick, Ontario), Sarah Hutcheson (Orlando, Fla.) and Nina Dobratz (Portland, Ore.) could not keep up with WSU, as the Cougars took a 2.7 second win over the Lady Vols with a time of 6:46.5.

The Second Eights crew of Molly Oellerich [cox.] (Arlington, Va.), Renee Brittle (Dublin, Va.), Beth Schwartz (Columbia, Tenn.), Alex Shishkov (Mississauga, Ontario), Kristen Galloway (Knoxville, Tenn/Farragut), Leah Smelser (Macon, Ga.), Caroline Howell (Davenport, Iowa), Kate Brownlee (North Gower, Ontario) and Jessica Ayres (Alpharetta, Ga.) were the next to race, but they too crossed the finish line a little behind Washington State. The Crimson and Grey took the win with a time of 6:55.2, downing the Big Orange by 7.6 seconds.

With the team victory decided, the Fours group was looking to keep up its winning ways. But the Cougars had other plans, as they clocked a 8:30.3 on the 2,000-meter course, beating the Lady Vols by 3.7 seconds. UT's crew of Kelly Todd [cox.] (Oak Ridge, Tenn.), Giulia Guerrero (Clarksville, Tenn.), Heather Hill (Knoxville, Tenn./Catholic), Kendra Warren (Franklin, Tenn.) and Sara Becker (San Diego, Calif.) lost for just the third time in eight races this spring.

With the morning session complete, the Lady Vols tried to regroup before they went up against the host team, Stanford. But the Cardinal continued its dominance in these dual meets, sweeping the Lady Vols in the afternoon competition. Stanford, ranked 17th in the USRowing/Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Varsity 8+ poll, took home a 8.7-second win over Tennessee in the first Varsity 8+, a 6.7-second triumph in the second V8+, and a 16-second victory in the V4+.

Meanwhile, the Lady Vol novices competed at the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships on nearby Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn. The first Novice 8+ finished seventh in its competition, while the second N8+ crew claimed bronze in its only race on Saturday afternoon.

The Orange and White will be back in action on Saturday, April 29 as they race Princeton, George Washington and UMass on Lake Carnegie in Princeton, N.J.
