KNOXVILLE, Tenn.

The University of Tennessee Lady Vol rowing team cruised through the first day of the SIRA Championships on Saturday, as four shells advanced to Sunday's Grand Finals. Also, UT's 2nd Novice 8+ boat captured the championship in its only race of the day with a win late in the afternoon.

Highlighting Tennessee's strong showing was the Varsity 8+ crew comprised of Erin Artz, Chelsea Pemberton, Kacey Montgomery, Kaitlin Bargreen, Kay Logan, Dana Forbes, Sally BeVille, Amy McIntosh and Nicole Bold, which claimed both its races. In the morning, the shell easily won its opening heat with a time of 7:02.7, finishing almost four seconds ahead of West Virginia. The afternoon heat didn't slow down the Lady Vols as they posted the event's fastest time in 6:49.0, edging Louisville by just more than a second at 6:50.3. The semifinal win sends UT to the Grand Final at 11:05 a.m. on Sunday.

Lizzie Brown, Elizabeth Humberd, Michelle Higdon, Claire Hennesy and Elizabeth Freeman guided the Varsity 4+ boat through two successful races. In the opening heat, the squad posted a time of 7:58.6, which was good enough for second behind Georgia Tech's 7:54.8 finish. The crew improved its time by nearly six seconds in the semifinals, 7:52.7, and finished second behind Marietta. The crew will race in the Grand Finals tomorrow at 10:35 a.m.

The 2nd Varsity 8+ shell, comprised of Shannon McMahon, Davida Lopez, Lindsay Sagar, Kelly Kraiss, Grace Harrington, Ginny Bradley, Claire Newton, Mary Gruzalski and Mary Beth Lewis, won its only race of the day with a time of 7:04.6, besting Miami and Purdue. The win means the Lady Vols will compete in Sunday's Grand Final at 10:05 a.m.

The Novice 8+ boat, crewed by Kristin Clark, McKenzie Craig, Marissa Allen, Holly McDaniel, Carol Wiegand, Heather Marshall, Hilary Gilmore, Kellie Pelphrey and Melissa DiCerbo, finished second in its opening heat with a time of 7:21.9, which was less than a second behind the winner, UCF. The squad was edged again, this time for second place, in the semifinals when Delaware snuck across the line in 7:11.1, just ahead of the Lady Vols who finished at 7:11.8. The crew will race in the Grand Finals on Sunday at 9:35 a.m.

UT's 2nd Novice 8+ shell, comprised of Tracy Szymula, Andrea Bagwell, Tabatha Eaton, Elizabeth Hoffman, Maegan Speck, Candice Scheffing, Shaina Frank, Erin Pemberton and Denecia Brown, finished off the Lady Vols' day in style as it brought home the first-place prize. The squad, which only raced in Saturday's final, crossed the line in 7:30.3, just edging out Purdue, which came across in 7:32.7.

Tomorrow's Grand Final action will begin at 9:35 a.m. and should conclude before noon.
