OAK RIDGE, Tenn. - The Lady Vol novices pulled in a pair of fourth-place showings on the first day of the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships, held this weekend on Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn.

Tennessee's second Novice 8+ edged out Louisville for its fourth-place finish in the women's "B" section. UCF took home the gold with a time of 7:36.20. The orange-clad crew of coxswain Stephanie Droste-Packham (Nashville, Tenn.), Ashley Malousis (Morristown, Tenn.), Heidi Buchanan (Washington, D.C.), Holly Phillippi (Gallatin, Tenn.), Sarah Patterson (Memphis, Tenn.), Rachel Simmons (Farragut, Tenn.), Alexandra Palus (Brookfield, Wis.), Shargi Rahmanian (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Jessica Coomer (Kingsport, Tenn.) traveled the 2,000-meter course in 8:15.12, finishing three seats ahead of the Cardinals.

In the Novice 8+ semifinals, the Lady Vols battled with Sacramento State for the third spot in the heat and the last spot in the grand finals. Nose to nose with 500 meters to go, the Hornets pulled out the five-seat win to send UT to the petite finals. The Golden Knights of UCF beat Purdue by a length, while the Boilermakers were a length up on the Hornets. Tennessee's fourth-place finishing group of coxswain Sydney Newman (Halls, Tenn.), Erica Smith (Overland Park, Kan.), Brittany Sehring (Alpharetta, Ga.), Stephanie Hunley (Knoxville, Tenn.), Laura Miller (Columbus, Miss.), Anna Nilsen (Roswell, Ga.), Margaret Webb (Jefferson City, Tenn.), Jená Murphy (Memphis, Tenn.) and Jewell Ludwigsen (Brentwood, Tenn.) ended up with a five-length advantage over Murray State and a 10-length lead over SMU.

The first Novice 8+ will compete against Murray State and SMU along with Tulsa and Cincinnati in the petite finals at 8:51 a.m. on Sunday. The Big Orange varsity team hits the water of the Housatonic River in Derby, Conn., next Saturday, April 28 against No. 2 Brown and No. 4 Yale.
