CLEMSON, S.C. - Competing against a strong field of nationally ranked foes, the Lady Vol rowing team concluded their races at the the Clemson Invitational on Sunday.

Saturday morning the Lady Vols' varsity eight took to the water against two top-20 teams, No. 19 Cornell and No. 20 Duke. Placing sixth, the shell coxed by Harper Lucas and including Katie King, Erika Johnson, Rachel White, Andrea Keesecker, Liz Dickson, Arin Anderson, Anita McLure, and Evelyn Radford crossed the finish line in 6 minutes and 46.4 seconds.

The second varsity eight accelerated in the last 500 of the morning race from fourth into third and was challenging for the second place spot when they crossed the line less than a second behind Oregon State. Coxed by Rachel Clagett, the Big Orange finished with a time of 6 minutes and 48.5 seconds.

In the varsity four field, the Volunteers' V4 finished sixth in the morning race with a time of 7 minutes and 52.6 seconds; however, in the afternoon session the V4 improved on their morning time by crossing the finish line in 7 minutes and 34.3 seconds. The varsity four coxed by Jessie Richardson competed against 3 top-20 teams on Saturday.

The second varsity four also was competitive against the field of nationally ranked teams. In the morning session, the Lady Vols' shell coxed by Ashley Fichthorn secured the second place slot with a time of 7 minutes and 55 seconds falling to Michigan State who crossed the finish line in 7 minutes and 49.9 seconds.

In the afternoon session, with a cross-tail wind aiding crews down the course, most competitors posted faster times than in the morning. The 2v4 crew of Goodwin, Cavins, Bishop and Gibbemeyer placed third with a time of 7 minutes and 36.1 seconds, securing a large lead over the fourth place finisher, Indiana.

In the afternoon session, the V8 finished fourth with a time of 6 minutes and 32.6 seconds.

The second varsity eight secured the third place slot in their afternoon race. The shell including Liza Rader, Whitney Wolfe, Kayla Lucier, Katherine Changes, Victoria Bartell, Jennifer Bailey, Sarah McAuliffe, Taylor Athan finished with a time of 6 minutes and 37.7 seconds, about ten seconds faster than their morning time.

Improvement for the Lady Vols' continued into Sunday's day of racing. The first varsity eight raced against the two-time national champions and No. 3 team in the country, Virginia on Sunday morning. The V8 fought hard off the line to claim second behind Virginia with 500 left in the race, but was narrowly edged into third by a late surge from Miami. Placing third, Tennessee finished with a time of 6 minutes and 57.7 seconds.

The second varsity eight finished with the fourth fastest time of the day out of 19 schools with a time of 7 minutes and 8.8 seconds in their race on Sunday, this time allowed Tennessee to secure the second place slot, second to Virginia.

In direct racing on the weekend, the 2V8 pushed ahead of Michigan State, Penn, Miami, Duke, Indiana, and Rhode Island.

The Clemson Invitational concluded for the Lady Vols' with a sixth place finish in the varsity four with a time of 8 minutes and 27.6 seconds.

Following the 1st Varsity 4's race on Sunday at 8:49 AM, the wind began to pick up and made it difficult for boats to lock on to the starting dock. Therefore, boats we forced to do a rolling start but all the races after the 8:49 AM are unofficial and the results will not be counted.

The Lady Vols will return to the water on Saturday, April 27 to race No. 7 Princeton, Dartmouth and Penn on Lake Carnegie in Princeton, NJ.
