KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The 13th-ranked Lady Vol Varsity 8+ defeated 17th-ranked Washington State University, as Tennessee took one of three races against the Cougars on Fort Lake Loudon on Saturday, improving the Lady Vols' top V8+ record to 6-0 in head-to-head competition. The start of the regatta was moved up an hour to 9 a.m. in order to avoid inclement weather conditions.

"There were some strong crosshead winds today, "Lady Vol head coach Lisa Glenn said."It played a factor for all of the boats in today's races."

"The Varsity 8+ made some good adjustments that benefited their race collectively. I am proud of their individual accountability to the game plan."

The Lady Vol V8+ squad of Molly Oellerich (cox.), Kaitlin Bargreen, Lauren Wells, Rachel Mayberry, McKenzie Craig, Dana Forbes, Chelsea Pemberton, Andrea Bagwell and Beth Schwartz, jumped out to an early seven-seat lead at the 500-meter mark, holding the lead the entire race and finishing in a time of 7:19.90, ahead of the Washington State varsity squad (7:28.10).

In the Varsity 4+, WSU took an early five-seat lead over the two Lady Vol shells that neither Big Orange shell could overcome, as the Cougars prevailed in 8:09.00, ahead of UT A at 8:16.00 and UT B in 8:30.60.

"We are seeing some progress in the fours," Glenn said, "But we still need to see more from them. The Second Varsity 8+ showed some good progress, and I am proud of how they raced today."

In the morning's most exciting competition, Washington State narrowly defeated Tennessee in the Second Varsity Eight event, with a time of 7:14.08, to the Lady Vols' 7:15.42. The two shells were even at the 500-meter mark, and WSU took a slim four-seat lead at the 1000-meter mark. The UT squad of Ashley Butturini [cox.], Sarah Hutcheson, Marissa Allen, Krista Gearing, Melissa DiCerbo, Kristin Galloway, Brittany Hunley, Genevieve Collins, and Christina Dobratz, challenged the Cougar shell down the stretch but could not overcome the WSU lead.

The Lady Vols will be in action again in the South and Central Region Rowing Championships at Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn., on May 14-15.
