CLEMSON, S.C. - The University of Tennessee women's rowing team, ranked 20th in the USRowing/CRCA Varsity Eight Coaches Poll, swept four races from South-Region rival Clemson, while narrowly being edged out in two events by No. 12 Washington State on Sunday.

In the first and most exciting event of the day, Tennessee and Washington State's 2nd varsity 8+ boats finished the 2000m course so closely together that the race had to go to a photo finish. After officials reviewed the videotape, they determined that the Cougars had nipped UT at the line by one tenth of a second. The Lady vol crew of junior Erin Artz (cox.), junior Amy McIntosh, sophomore McKenzie Craig, sophomore Andrea Bagwell, senior Kelly Kravitz, senior Kelly Kraiss, freshman Lindsay Jones, sophomore Marissa Allen and senior Kay Logan were credited with a time of 6:54.7 compared to WSU's 6:54.6. Clemson placed third at 7:21.1.

The Varsity 8+ competition was nearly as exciting, as the Lady Vols finished just 1.7 seconds behind the 12th-ranked Cougars. UT's squad of junior Lizzie Brown (cox.),sophomore Kaitlin Bargreen, junior Nicole Bold, freshman Lauren Wells, sophomore Chelsea Pemberton, sophomore Dana Forbes, senior Kacey Montgomery, sophomore Melissa Dicerbo and junior Jessica Shreder turned in a time of 6:58.3. WSU's winning time was 6:56.6, while third-place Clemson finished in 7:09.6.

Tennessee defeated three Clemson shells en route to claiming victory in the varsity 4+ event. The Lady Vol quintet of sophomore Jovanna Vick (cox.), sophomore Hilary Gilmore, junior Mary Beth Lewis, junior Mary Gruzalski and senior Sally BeVille recorded a time of 8:00.8 to finish nearly 10 seconds ahead of the nearest Tiger boat.

UT's novice 8+ shell, powered by freshmen Maggie Wheeler (cox.), Holly Holmes, Beth Schwartz, Diane Samu, Ashley Anders, Hillary Graber, Katie Peterson, Amy McCormick and Ariana Fitzgerald, also looked impressive, downing Clemson by more than 15 seconds. The Lady Vols posted a time of 7:31.2 compared to the Tigers 7:47.5.

Tennessee's next action will come as it hosts the Lexus Central/South Regional Championships, May 17-18, on Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
