May 5, 2002

KNOXVILLE, Tenn.

At the first-ever Tennessee Invitational, the Lady Vol rowing team came away with victories in three of the five races to win the event. The regatta took place on the waters of the Tennessee River and also featured crews from Cincinnati and Eastern Michigan. The outcome is a good stepping-stone for the Orange and White after struggling last week at the Clemson Classic and as they prepare for the regional meet in a couple of weeks.

In the first race of the day, Tennessee's Varsity 8+ crew of Erin Artz (coxswain), Chelsea Pemberton, Kacey Montgomery, Kat Bargreen, Kay Logan, Dana Forbes, Sally BeVille, Amy McIntosh and Nicole Bold narrowly held off Cincinnati's crew in a time of 6:31.00. The Bearcats were 1.1 seconds behind in 6:32.1.

Tennessee and Cincinnati's 2nd Varsity 4+ shells matched up in the next race and again UT came away with the victory. The Lady Vol all-freshman crew of Jovanna Vick (cox.), Marissa Allen, Holly McDaniel, Carol Weigand and Heather Marshall crossed the finish line in 7:45.1. Cincinnati was in second at a clip of 7:51.72.

The third race featured the fours again, but this time it was Tennessee and Cincinnati's Varsity 4+ boats. UT coxswain Lizzie Brown picked up her fifth home victory of the year as her crew of Claire Hennesy, McKenzie Craig, Michelle Higdon and Elizabeth Freeman had open water on the Bearcats and won in 7:32.9, nearly 11 seconds ahead of Cincinnati.

With the entry of Eastern Michigan in the 2nd Varsity 8+ race the course was shortened to 1,850m and this time Cincinnati picked up the victory. UC made a strong push at the end and walked on the Orange and White crossing first in a time of 6:00.0. The Lady Vol team of Shannon McMahon (cox.), Davida Lopez, Claire Newton, Kelly Kraiss, Grace Harrington, Ginny Bradley, Lindsay Sagar, Mary Gruzalski and Mary Beth Lewis was 1.1 seconds behind in second place. Eastern Michigan took home third place honors in 6:11.70.

Eastern Michigan claimed first place in the Novice 8+ race as it rowed across the line in 6:19.20. UT's shell of Kristin Clark, Melissa DiCerbo, Tabatha Eaton, Andrea Bagwell, Kellie Pelphrey, Elizabeth Hoffman, Hilary Gilmore, Erin Pemberton and Candice Scheffing were eight tenths of a second behind them in second place. Cincinnati finished third in 6:58.20.

Tennessee will spend the next two weeks preparing for the Lexus Central/South Region Sprints, May 18-19, in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
