OAK RIDGE, Tenn. - The No. 16-ranked University of Tennessee rowing team advanced to the Grand Finals in both the 2V8 and the V8+ at day one of the 2010 Aramark Sprints on Melton Hill Lake.
In the first race of the day, Tennessee boats came in fifth and sixth in two different heats of the Open 4+. The Lady Vols followed that up with a fifth place finish in the Novice 8+ prelims.
UT closed the morning strong, posting runner-up finishes in preliminary heats of the second varsity eight and the top eight, pushing the Orange and White into the A/B semifinals of both events.
Those two shells would continue their success in the afternoon session, starting first with the 2V8+. UT crossed the finish line third in the semis, behind Virginia and Michigan. Tennessee posted a time of 6:48.95.
The Orange and White punched its ticket to the Grand Finals as one of the top three teams in that race.
In the final race of the afternoon, UT's top eight boat also posted a third place finish in an extremely tight race. Michigan State crossed the finish line first in 6:33.60, followed by Michigan in 6:36.70 and the Big Orange in 6:37.53
Tennessee will compete in five finals on Sunday: the Open 4+ (D Final), Varsity 4+ (Petite Final), Novice 8+ (Petite Final) and the grand finals for both the V8 and 2V8. Racing will get underway at 9 a.m. and a predetermined points system will be used. The winner of the South Region will automatically qualify for the NCAA Championships, held from May 28-30 in Gold River, Calif.
The Lady Vols are also aiming for a Conference USA Championship, which will be determined by the final standings.
